Breastsleeping: What It Is and How to Do It Safely!

Today, I want to introduce you to the concept of breastsleeping OR if you already do it, remind you why it’s AMAZING!

This practice has been a lifesaver for me and millions of other mums around the world.

If it doesn't resonate with you, that’s perfectly fine – just skip this one. You may actually completely disagree with the concept entirely. That’s totally cool! We all make the best decisions for ourselves and our babies! But if you are still here, let’s get into it!

What is ‘Breastsleeping’?

Well ‘Breastsleeping’ is literally what word implies… It’s when you and your baby share a sleep space, and your baby has access to your breasts all throughout the night. It's basically like having an all-night milk bar open, where your little one can pop in for a snack whenever they fancy. They might feed for 20 minutes or just 2 minutes.

What’s the best position for Breastsleeping?

For most mums who practice breastsleeping, including myself, the "cuddle curl" is the go-to choice. I have used this position with all five of my babies since my first was born nearly 15 years ago, it’s my favourite and very intuitive! A few hours after my first baby's birth, my midwife taught it to me and it felt like the most natural thing in the world. I was all curled up in my own bed, with my new baby at my breast and it was BLISS!

So, what exactly is the "cuddle curl" position?

Well, it’s a safe way to sleep with your baby and your body forms a protective "C" shape around them. Plus your baby is positioned at the perfect level for easy latching all throughout the night. You bring your knees up and tuck your arm under your head or your pillow, forming a curl shape around your baby. With your knees bent, this position prevents you from rolling onto your baby and also keeps your partner at a safe distance. It's so simple and millions of mums sleep like this every night with their babies!

What are the benefits of Breastsleeping for your baby?

There are so many benefits of safe breastsleeping!

Connection and closeness: Imagine having a sleepover with your favorite person in the world every night!

Regular breastfeeds: Frequent trips to the milk bar help keep your milk supply in check.

Health perks: Breastsleeping can regulate your baby’s breathing, heartbeat, and body temperature. Some studies even suggest it might reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Better sleep: Babies feel safe and relaxed nestled close to their mums, often leading to more restful sleep for EVERYONE!

Less fussiness: Babies who sleep while breastfeeding tend to wake up less and cry less during the night.

But wait, are there benefits of Breastsleeping for you?

Yes! Breastsleeping isn't just beneficial for your baby, it offers heaps of benefits for mums as well:

Improved Sleep Quality: With your baby close to you, you can feel safer and more relaxed, leading to better sleep.

Reduced Risk of Postpartum Depression: Many mums report feeling more confident and less anxious about their baby's care, which can help reduce the risk of postpartum depression.

Sounds almost like milk magic! But remember Safety First!

What is Breastsleeping safety?

Safe breastsleeping is super crucial. Most experts around the world agree that your bed should be firm, with no loose pillows, blankets, or other items that could pose a suffocation risk. It's also important that you are a non-smoker, not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and aware of your baby's presence in the bed at all times. It would be so irresponsible and negligent not to share these gold standard safety tips! But please never feel judged if you do breastfeeding mum life differently.

For me and millions of other mums, breastsleeping is the norm! It's the best choice for our families! Knowledge truly is power, and becoming informed empowers you to make the best decisions for you and your family. If you're sitting there thinking, 'BUT Amy!! how can I embrace the breastsleeping mum life while still enjoying sex and intimacy?' - well, you'll have to wait for next week's blog... wink wink.
